In 2019, SAKI awarded the Beadle County State's Attorney Office funding in the amount $498,332 to inventory, track, and test previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAKs) for the state of South Dakota (SD). The office—together with the Department of Criminal Investigation, SD Network Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, River City Domestic Violence Shelter, and Center for the Prevention of Childhood Maltreatment—will also use the funds to strengthen the SD Statewide Sexual Assault Task Force (SATF). The SD SATF will address and identify the individual, organizational, and systemic factors that lead to unsubmitted SAKs across the state. The Beadle County State's Attorney Office will also use SAKI funds to increase prosecutorial technical assistance across the state to improve case outcomes and survivor engagement.

Our Mission

Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative aims to create a coordinated community response that ensures just resolution to sexual assault cases. Through this program, funding is provided to support multidisciplinary community response teams engaged in the comprehensive reform of jurisdictions approaches to sexual assault cases resulting from evidence found in previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits.
