SAKI awarded the City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department a $238,031 grant in FY2018 to complete their sexual assault kit (SAK) inventory and submit all previously unsubmitted SAKs to a private laboratory. The department also convened an interdisciplinary working group to update protocols related to sexual assault investigations.
In FY2020, the City of Fort Lauderdale received an additional $218,496 in SAKI funding to continue testing previously unsubmitted SAKs and developing a comprehensive SAK tracking system. Additionally, the funding will be used to address fragmented SAKs in their SAKI inventory, expand on current best practices related to sex crimes investigations and victim assistance, expand Violent Criminal Apprehension Program participation, and standardize victim notification protocols.

Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative aims to create a coordinated community response that ensures just resolution to sexual assault cases. Through this program, funding is provided to support multidisciplinary community response teams engaged in the comprehensive reform of jurisdictions approaches to sexual assault cases resulting from evidence found in previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits.
