Kansas Completes Rape Kit Inventory - Interview

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) completed a statewide inventory of untested sexual assault kits, identifying over 2,000 kits. Montana will standardize collection, testing of sexual assault kits

The Montana Department of Justice is developing a tracking system for the estimated 1,400 untested rape kits that have been stored in evidence rooms around the state. The state plans to enter all rape kits into the system and continue to add them going forward. The state will evaluate why testing of these kits did not occur in the first place. Update on untested rape kits in Nevada

The Nevada Attorney General's Office provided an update on testing progress across the state. As of March 2017, around one third of untested kits in the state have been sent for testing. Kansas becomes the first state to complete statewide sexual assault kit count with 100% voluntary law enforcement participation

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, (KBI) completed a statewide inventory of all previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits in Kansas. This count was accomplished with the full participation of each of Kansas’s 383 city and county law enforcement agencies. They are the first state to have 100% participation that is voluntary. KBI identified 2,220 unsubmitted sexual assault kits in the possession of 86 law enforcement agencies. Approximately 1,200 have been submitted to the forensic laboratory as of March 2017. Dallas man gets life after cold case rape kit testing program leads to ID

A Dallas man was convicted to life in prison after being linked to five sexual assault cases since 2008. This is the first conviction resulting from Dallas efforts to test evidence from unsubmitted rape kits. “I’m sure he thought that no one would ever believe them, but ladies and gentleman of the jury you can believe them,” prosecutor Amy Derrick said.
