In FY2022, SAKI awarded the City of Tucson Police Department (TPD) $1.5 million to support sexual assault investigations and prosecutions that had resulted from 2019 completions of testing of their previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAKs). In collaboration with the Pima County Attorney's Office (PCAO), TPD will utilize advanced DNA testing methodologies to identify and apprehend offenders. TPD will use grant funding to support personnel, maintain an inventory of cold-case SAKs and their evidence, review and prioritize cases for advanced testing, and conduct follow-up investigations. Key project partners will include PCAO, the PCAO Victim Services Division, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault (SACASA).

Tucson Police to start processing sexual assault kits within a week
Athena Kehoe, KGUN9, Sep 11, 2024
"Back in 2022, Tucson Police Department (TPD) received a grant from Sexual Assault Initiative Kits (SAKI) to complete previous unfinished sexual assault kits.
Dallas Wilson with the TPD Detectives team explained the importance of this grant:
"Now, instead of the victim going to the hospital, getting the kit, and then having a patrol officer take the kit to our evidence center and put in storage, and then wait for an investigator to potentially request for that kit to get tested… we’re just testing them all immediately.”
Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative aims to create a coordinated community response that ensures just resolution to sexual assault cases. Through this program, funding is provided to support multidisciplinary community response teams engaged in the comprehensive reform of jurisdictions approaches to sexual assault cases resulting from evidence found in previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits.
