In FY2023, SAKI awarded the Durham County District Attorney's Office $1.15 million to compensate a prosecutor and legal assistant dedicated to SAKI cases; pay travel, lodging, and subsistence costs for survivors during trial; compensate expert witnesses during trial; utilize an outside DNA consultant as needed; and employ specialty DNA testing in certain cases with particularly complex physical evidence. The efforts of the Durham County District Attorney's Office will result in rigorous prosecution, robust and trauma-informed survivor engagement, continued coordination with the Durham Police Department and the City of Durham, and enhanced coordination with other local law enforcement agencies that possess sexual assault kits, as well as additional service providers responsive to survivors' unique needs. By the end of the grant period, the Durham County District Attorney's Office will have obtained additional convictions, resolved cases more quickly than non-cold case sexual assaults, and engaged historically under-served survivors.

Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative aims to create a coordinated community response that ensures just resolution to sexual assault cases. Through this program, funding is provided to support multidisciplinary community response teams engaged in the comprehensive reform of jurisdictions approaches to sexual assault cases resulting from evidence found in previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits.
