The sexual assault problem we can't afford to ignore

Using data from the Detroit Action Research Project, researchers developed a cost-benefit analysis of testing a SAK. Based on their results, they argue that the large investment in testing previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits and investigating hits will pay off.

BJA has released the FY 2018 National SAKI solicitation. Applications are due April 30, 2018.
SAKI funding can be used to inventory, test, track, investigate, and prosecute unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAKs), support multidisciplinary policy development, and collect lawfully owed DNA for CODIS upload. Purpose Area 4 is new this year. This Purpose Area is specifically for the investigation and prosecution of cold case sexual assaults. To receive Purpose Area 4 funding, applicants must clearly demonstrate their jurisdiction(s) has previously addressed, or is currently effectively addressing, the major issues associated with unsubmitted SAKs.

SAKI TTA Webinar - Emerging DNA Techniques

This webinar highlighted innovative technologies for use in DNA forensics. Emerging DNA Techniques featured presentations from Cybergenetics, Genetic Genealogy, and Parabon NanoLabs. Dr. Mark W. Perlin, Cybergenetics, discussed the use of DNA mixture evidence to solve sexual assault cases and the importance of uploading the profiles obtained from a mixed sample to a DNA database. Dr. Barbara Rae-Venter, Genetic Genealogy, highlighted the use of autosomal DNA in cold case sexual assault investigations and how to apply it to an example case. Dr. Ellen Greytak, Parabon NanoLabs, discussed the benefits of DNA phenotyping when applied to criminal investigations through the use of their software, Snapshot.
Iowa launches website to help victims of sex assault

Iowa has launched a website to provide resources to those who’ve been victimized and provide information on law enforcement best practices. Survivors of sexual assault can also use the site to check the progress of their case.

This webinar was presented by Amy Jeanguenat, Principal Consultant with Mindgen LLC, and Jayann Sepich, founder of DNA Saves. This webinar was the second in a two-part series discussing lawfully owed DNA. This webinar focused on recognizing the importance of obtaining and processing lawfully owed DNA samples in adequate time to recognize the full benefits of the CODIS database.
Jayann Sepich discussed the relevance of lawfully owed DNA databases and the complexity of data collection. Amy Jeanguenat discussed considerations and strategies for assessing the scope of sample collection, tracking, and processing within a jurisdiction and the impact to the crime laboratory.
