In FY2022, SAKI awarded the City of Tucson Police Department (TPD) $1.5 million to support sexual assault investigations and prosecutions that had resulted from 2019 completions of testing of their previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAKs). In collaboration with the Pima County Attorney's Office (PCAO), TPD will utilize advanced DNA testing methodologies to identify and apprehend offenders. TPD will use grant funding to support personnel, maintain an inventory of cold-case SAKs and their evidence, review and prioritize cases for advanced testing, and conduct follow-up investigations. Key project partners will include PCAO, the PCAO Victim Services Division, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault (SACASA).
